Fire fighters and first responders are there for us when we need them.

Our volunteers serve the residents of the South Quadra Island Fire Protection District, working out of a 1970 building that is no longer adequate, safe, or compliant. Quadra Island needs a replacement Fire Hall #2 to keep the community and our volunteers safe.

Project Update

Heriot Bay Fire Hall #2 Replacement Project Approved

The Heriot Bay Fire Hall #2 Replacement Project was approved through an Alternative Approval Process (AAP) that concluded on Thursday, March 27, 2025. The AAP addressed the adoption of “Fire Hall #2 Construction Borrowing Bylaw” which authorizes the South Quadra Island Fire Protection District to borrow up to $2.9 million to finance the replacement fire hall.

Approval by an Alternative Approval Process is obtained when less than 10% of eligible property owners within the District submit an opposition Elector Response Form by the deadline. Of an estimated 1668 eligible property owners, 149 response forms were received.

Upon learning that the Fire Hall #2 Replacement Project would go forward, Fire Chief Sharon Clandening stated, “We are excited to move forward in improving the infrastructure that enables our firefighters to serve the community effectively for years to come.”

Chairman of the Board of Trustees Murray Abercrombie said, “On behalf of the Trustees of the South Quadra Fire Protection District, I am pleased to see that this much needed project has the support of the majority of eligible Quadra Islanders and can proceed to construction, with completion in 2026/2027. As we look forward to the next steps, I would like to acknowledge all the work done by the Trustees and Fire Department Members to get to this point. As we have stated throughout the process, we intend to proceed, mindful of costs, to build a functional hall that will meet all current standards and requirements, and will serve the needs of the community well into the future.”

We will be providing regular updates as this project moves ahead. Please continue to check the project website  and our Facebook page, or sign up for our email list HERE.

Thank you Quadra Island for your support.

Project

A replacement Fire Hall #2 for Heriot Bay

Fire Hall #2 in Heriot Bay was built in 1964. The needs of the community have grown since then and seismic reviews have found that the building will collapse in an earthquake. Retrofitting and renovating the current Fire Hall #2 is not practical given the lack of water on the site, the fact that the site is leased and not owned, the age of the building, and its seismic issues.

A new building is needed, to be built on land we own at 1525 West Road.  The longer we wait to build, the more costly it will be.

Project

A replacement Fire Hall #2 for Heriot Bay

Fire Hall #2 in Heriot Bay is a cinder block garage built in 1970 on leased land. The needs of the community and standards for fire halls have changed significantly since then.  Seismic reviews have found that the building will likely collapse in an earthquake. Retrofitting and renovating the current Hall #2 is not practical given the lack of water and septic, the age and construction of the building, the seismic issues, and the fact that the lot is quite small and leased.

A new building is needed, to be built on land we already own at 1525 West Road.  The longer we wait to build, the more costly it will be.
